Eyeliner was designed to give the illusion of fuller lashes, originally. Applying eye liner in a couple of techniques ensures this. Tight-liner and hidden liner. What’s the difference?
Tight-liner is to be applied on the outer upper lash line. It’s tight to the lash line, you can’t see it.
Hidden-liner is to be applied on the top lash line in the inner part of your eye
Pencil eye liner is great for smudging. It doesn’t last long.though. I don’t really use it as much. When I was younger, I would place my pencil eye liner into a flame. So light a candle. Leave the eye liner in the flame for a few seconds, apply. It dries so quickly. This creates an intense look. A little mixology.
Gel Liner, I use a lot, especially when creating a cat eye. Gel liner comes in a pot. With your eye liner brush, dip the tip of your brush in the pot. (See Makeup Tip below on what to do next). Apply your eye liner.
Ben Nye Cake Eye Liner
With cake liner (the two that I absolutely love is from Ben Nye and Laura Mercier) you need to have a paper towel that is damp. Dip your brush into the damp paper towel, into the cake liner, wipe off the excess product – see Makeup Tip below for more info, then apply. It’s a nice alternative to the gel liner. I will use it to create cat eyes, or anything that is creative eye liner. You can do the same with gel liner.
Powder is nice for a natural long-lasting alternative. There is now eye liner on the market that is designed specifically for eye liner. There is even dual intensity, as well. This means you can have the eyeliner applied softly, so dry or intense, or so wet. You can use black eye shadow as your eyeliner if you don’t have any powder eye liner. For an intense look, take your eye liner brush and dip it into your eye shadow then into your damp paper towel. Remove excess product. Apply your eyeliner. Don’t mix water into your eye shadow unless it’s dual intense (to be used wet and dry)
Please note: I was taught on how to use liquid eyeliner, however I don’t use it on my clients. I was trained to use other eye liners instead. For example, gel, cake, pencil, cream. Liquid eyeliner is way too harsh and doesn’t add anything to the eyes. Gel delivers excellent intensity, so does cake liner. I want to be clear that I am not putting down liquid eye liner. It’s really your preference.
Makeup Tip: Always wipe off any excess product on a paper towel before applying. Begin with a thin layer. Build it if you want to.
