6 Tips to Makeup Perfection

Blending will be Your Best Friend

Always blend your makeup. The end result always looks so much better.

After applying blush, blend it by sweeping your powder brush that has left over powder on it (don’t add anymore to your brush. It will only remove the beautiful application that you have applied). Since you’ve powdered, use what’s left on your brush. That is all you need.

With a crease brush of all sizes will only help you to create a beautiful eye look by blending.

Blend your foundation and your contour, especially if you are using cream. Actually any and all cream products should be applied before you powder. This helps to blend, as well as preventing your cream-based makeup from looking harsh or the difficulty of having to blend it. Cream can be difficult, if you haven’t used your body heat (using the back of your hand) to warm up the product for easy blending. So, remember, cream and liquid is to be ALWAYS applied before powder.

Remove Excess Makeup is Your Second Best Friend

Try to not touch your face or use the back of your hand, as much. If you have to, for example using cream-based products, then do it. Otherwise, don’t use your hand to  remove and additional makeup products on the back of your hand. Always use a paper towel. The reason is because, the oils in your hand differ from the oils in your face. Mix those tow different oils with the oil in your makeup, and you will be attracting bacteria into your products.

Concealer

When choosing your shade, keep in mind a pink undertone will look ashy, or on me I look like a ghost or dead. If the undertone is too yellow, then the concealer will look orange on you. For darker skin tones, the undertone is red. Then you have to look at warm and cool tones. If you are unsure, turn your arms over, so your palms are facing the ceiling. Look at your vines. Do they look blue? Or do they green? Blue is a cool undertone, while green is an warm undertone. Warm colours appeal to the eyes. Cool colours hang out in the background.

Tight-Lining & Hidden-Liner

To know exactly how to apply tight-liner and how to apply hidden-liner, please refer to this post: How-To: All About Eyeliner. This is the most important eye-liner tricks to know. It gives the illusion of fuller lashes. It also fills in any empty gaps to hide it, which gives this illusion. This technique allows eye-liner to do what it has been created to do.

Tip: If you have small eyes, stay clear of applying eye-liner on the waterline of your eyes on the bottom lash line. It only will make your eyes look smaller and even tired. This technique is more for those who have larger eyes that want to minimize the size of their eyes.

Blush

For a younger-looking, fresh look, apply your blush on the apples of your cheeks only. After removing excess product, apply the blush in circular motions using the tip of your brush. My Makeup Routine

Bronzer

Bronzer is excellent to add radiance to your complexion if you have dry skin or mature skin. It also counteracts redness, such as rosacea.

My Makeup Routine

This is my makeup routine. It’s quick and it’s simple, as I like my every day makeup routine to be; quick and simple.

Lancome La Base Pro (C$48 http://www.lancome.ca)

1. It’s Prime Time!

I begin by applying a primer. Some of my favourite primers include Lancome, Smashox, Dior, NARS and, especially Chanel. This primer is a lotion based primer. It moisturizes the skin while acting as a primer. Using a silicone based primer, such as Lancome or the famous Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer requires you to ensure that you’re makeup is silicone based.
As for Chanel, you can use either water base or silicone base makeup with it.

Make Up For Ever Ultra HD Invisible Cover Foundation (C$50 http://www.makekupforever.ca)

2. Foundation, Cover Up, Powder, Oh My!
I like using foundations that contain a bit of a concealer in them, which is normally HD foundations, meaning they are silicone base, as well as that these foundations contain a built in concealer. If you need more coverage than minimal coverage. HD foundations can only do so much like covering acne/blemish scars. Silicone is a long lasting ingredient to ensure long-lasting results up to eight hours of makeup wear, with very minimal to no touch ups that are needed. I like using my foundation brush applying in a downward motion to prevent all makeup from entering into my pores. This will dry out your skin, dry skin ages much quicker than other skin types. A powder foundation delivers coverage in case the foundation misses anything, after you have removed any excess product. I like applying my powder by concentrating it. How do I do this? With my powder on my powder brush, I like using my now discontinued Dior Powder/Blush Brush that was designed by John Galliano right before he left as Creative Director for Dior. With a brush like this, a little bit of powder goes a long way. So, with brush in hand, I will pat the brush all over my face. You are applying more product when it is concentrated vs to sweeping it onto the face. The sweeping motion is what I use to blend the powder in to even it out. Viola, imperfections are camouflaged. I like a matte finish, so I like powder.

NARS Dual-Intensity Blush in Fervor (C$55 http://www.narscosmetics.com

3. Blush It!
The new NARS duo blush is so long lasting that whatever intensity of application you apply in the morning before heading to work, you will notice that it stays in tact eight hours later. Yup, that’s right, ladies, you have read that right. No touch ups needed. Dior and Smashbox deliver the same results. I love using my artist brush from Make Up For Ever to apply my blush. this blush can be worn in an intense manner by wetting the powder, or in it’s natural state by applying it dry.

4. Look Into My Eyes!
Do you see my baby blues? That is one of the reasons as to why I keep my eye makeup natural with a brown eye shadow, wither in a sophisticated smokey eye or just as is. I love wearing colour from neon pink, neon yellow to pastels to white. I normally line my upper lash line with the tight-liner technique and hidden liner technique so my lashes give the illusion that they are full from all angles, which is actually what both techniques are excellent for. And, of course, mascara. I don’t have sensitive eyes, like I thought I had, instead I have dry eyes, moving out to Calgary last year, which is a dry climate, my eye have become even drier if that is even possible, so any mascaras that does not contain fragrance in them is what I can wear. I love 100% Pure mascara made from either black tea or blackberries. I don’t need a fragrance in my mascara. Who is going to smell my lashes? “Do my lashes smell pretty today?” Haha.
Tip: Powder is much more long-lasting than pencil. I like using a powder that has a dual property; wet or dry. Wetting the eye shadow wet will give an intense look. A dry powder gives it a soft, natural look.
A little mixology with an eye shadow pencil: Place it under a flame for a couple of seconds. Remove. Apply. This result is that it looks like you are wearing liquid eye liner. Excellent alternative if you’ve ran out of your liquid eye liner, gel eye liner, cake eye liner.

Dior Addict Lipstick (C$42 http://www.dior.com)

4. Lips Have It All
Because, my eyes are natural looking, my feature that I have selected to play up is my lips. Just remember if you want your lips to look big, stick with nude pink, true red, so light colours. Bright colours, including bright red will make lips look small. You can always contour your lips (We shall save that one for another blog – if interested, just let me know) Bring on the colour! I don’t have a favourite lipstick. I don’t wear lip glosses. It’s too shiny. When I want shine, I will use a creamy lipstick. Creamy lipsticks today, as opposed to back in the day are made from beeswax. Beeswax retains moisture, locks in moisture, delivers moisture, so creamy lipsticks will moisturize your lips. Matte lipstick dry them out. If you have dry lips, exfoliate them before applying.  With foundation and powder applied over my lips when I had applied the duo onto my base. This is called lip blocking. When lips have been blocked the acid in the lips cannot change the colour or absorb it depending how pigmented your lips are. My are pigmented, as I cannot wear sheer, light colours. My lips absorb them. For others, the colour changes slight or drastically. So, more pigmented your lips are, the more it will absorb the colour or the actual content. Highly pigmented colours usually work for everyone who are in the predicament of absorption. As for getting that true colour that you see, whether it’s for fashion purposes (blue lips), the colour remains in tact. Don’t forget, when you are applying your foundation and powder to not exclude your lips.

Viola! My makeup application is complete 🙂

How-to: Applying Foundation

Makeup Tip #1: Always remove excess (extra) product on a paper towel or the back of your hand. The latter is essential when using cream foundation. I’ll explain later. All makeup is to be applied in a downward motion. This prevents your makeup form entering into your pores. Side by side is fine, as long as it’s downward. With makeup always begin with a thin layer, and build on top of it, if need be. Never go thick first. It only ends up being much more difficult and time consuming to remove any product, especially pigmented products. Also, wash your face in an upward motion, so your skincare products get into your pores to clean out the toxins, dirt, etc.

Liquid Foundation

Apply foundation in the same manner as you would when painting a wall. For those of you who have not painted a wall, don’t worry, I’m with you. I’ve been told it’s like painting a wall. Anyway, apply your foundation downward in a straight line, then diagonally, side by side. It blends it all together. So, you don’t find streaks.

Cream Foundation

Warm the cream up on the back of your hand. Your body heat warms up the foundation making it easier to apply and blend. Otherwise, it is harder. You may even end apply more and more product onto your face. Maybe, even struggling to blend until the formula warmed up on your face making it easier to blend and apply to which you should have done in the first place. You don’t want to struggle or apply more product thinking you need more. This will only end up creating a caked on finish. You don’t want that, unless you do. Your choice. With that said, begin with a thin layer. Cream goes a long way, so you really don’t need much. It’s opaque. It is full coverage. This is why I’m advising you to start with a thin layer. See Makeup Tip above for more information. A cream foundation brush works well, so does a regular foundation brush. Your preference.

Makeup Tip #2: Beauty Blenders are sponges. As a trained makeup artist, I was trained to use brushes to paint a face, and that sponges are to be used as an eraser. Sponges absorb half of your product; when you need to touch up, you have to touch up the whole face, so the application looks even and balanced, other wise it will look blotchy or the finish application looks too much, as in not natural looking.

Makeup Tip #3: NEVER APPLY YOUR MAKEUP WITH YOUR FINGERS. The oils in your hand differ from the oils on your face and the product. This causes your makeup to separate in a matter of minutes or within an hour. For the longest time, and I some-what still to this day, it’s difficult for me to watch anyone apply their foundation with their fingers. Sometimes, I have to turn my head. I can’t. I just can’t ….Watch.

Makeup Tip #4: You can thin out your thick (full coverage) foundations. Mix in a bit of moisturizer into your product. Once your cream has warmed up, add the moisturizer. Don’t mix the two together when the cream is cold. It has to be warmed up. This is makeup mixology.

Which Powders Compliment Which Foundations?

Before I get into anything, always powder after you’ve applied your base makeup, or makeup that is in liquid or cream form to keep your makeup in place. In case you don’t have any crease-less makeup, powders you will love. If you don’t like powder, than use a light powder. Light powders are in loose form. Otherwise, use a setting powder. They don’t comprise of pigment, making them colour-less.

Foundation Pairing with Powder

Liquid Foundation -> Any powder, minus powder foundation. It’s in the foundation family. Also, it’s heavy, as in it delivers full coverage, but light-weight, as in how it feels when you wear it.

Tinted Moisturizer -> Compact. You can use a loose powder. However a tinted moisturizer is already so light. A compact powder only balances it out.

BB Cream same as tinted moisturizer.

Cream Foundation -> Loose Powder

CC Cream same as cream foundation.

Mousse Foundation -> Compact or Loose Powder. No Powder Foundation. If you do use powder foundation, make sure that there is hardly anything on the powder brush.

Dual Foundation -> You don’t need any powder. It goes on as a liquid foundation and dries to a powdery finish.

HD Foundation -> Loose powder. HD Foundation has a built in concealer…a little bit. When you need to conceal more. Then you whip out your concealer to conceal. This means it does deliver full coverage. It doesn’t mean that it feels heavy when wearing it. Use a loose powder.

Which Foundation is For You?

Smashbox Cosmetics Smashbox Cosmetics Studio Skin 15 Hour Wear Hydrating Foundation SPF 10

Dehydrated Skin

Guess what? There are now foundations that contain skincare ingredients in them. These foundations are designed to hydrate your skin. All the while providing the coverage you need and want. I’m currently using the foundation above. I’ve just discovered it. It works really well.

Dry Skin

Any foundation that is water based works well. It can be a liquid foundation, a mousse. It can be oil based. It can be even cream foundation. For dry skin and dehydrated skin, I’d stay away from any silicone-based products. Silicone dries out the skin. It actually causes the skin to be more dehydrated. I doubt you want to end up mature skin, or premature aging skin.

Normal Skin

My best advice for you, is to look into what skin condition do you have. I have normal skin, but I turn to product that hydrate my skin. If skin is sensitive, than skincare that for sensitive skin. Sensitive skin and dehydrated skin are practically hand in hand. Otherwise, use which ever foundation you’d prefer.

Oily Skin

Look for anything that will either balance out the sebum or to absorb it. Powder foundation is a good choice. Non-oily foundations. For example, liquid, mousse, oil – look for which essential oils that are good for your skin type, or read up on it here: Acne Prone/Blemish Prone Skin & Face Oils for Your Skin Type!
